Buggy Session | Kain Sisters

I met Cyn years ago when she was still shooting weddings. Mina James was just a baby and little sister, Minnie wasn’t even thought of yet. Fast forward, they’ve moved back to the Lake Norman area and added Minnie to their crew. When Cyn asked if her 90 year old grandmother could join them, I told her of course! How often do little girls have their photo professionally taken with their great grandmother!? I thought it was awesome, and my only regret of their session wasn’t asking Cyn and her mom to hop in for a few of all of them together. I absolutely love working in a studio setup SO MUCH. Too hot? Raining? Too cold? Too humid? It doesn’t matter! I love it so much, we are planning to use our (yet to be finished) man cave at our home (a separate building behind our home) for studio work! We’ll have backdrops hung, a bathroom to change in and snacks! I cannot wait to get rolling on this project later this year. Until then, I’ll keep snagging my girl, Laura’s studio 😉

Camera 101

Happy Tuesday All! I’m here with some very exciting news…. I’m hosting 2 more Camera 101 classes this year!!!! On March 31st I hosted the first class for 3 lovely ladies. They showed up with their cameras, eager and excited to learn how to take better photographs. Our syllabus lead us through the camera mechanics in the morning, some more intense lighting concepts later and even a little practice 🙂 Unfortunately, I was a bad photographer and didn’t take a single picture during the class 🙁 I’ll do better next time, promise! So…. if you want to learn about using your camera on M instead of P or Auto…. this class is perfect for you! Here’s what Katherine had to say about the class… ” Camera 101 was an informative introduction to my SLR camera. I was afraid to use anything but the “Auto” setting until I learned about what all those confusing terms meant – now I am much more comfortable using the Manual function and experimenting with the pictures I’m taking. Jessica was a great teacher, her explanations were clear and she has a lot of patience. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who just got a “fancy pants” camera that they would like to get to know better 🙂 “   Wanna come?? We have TWO new dates open…. here’s the info…. Where: My office in downtown Davidson When: July 29 OR October 7, 1230PM-430PM Perks: Snacks & Goody bag provided! Price: $145 Who: Limited to 4 people in each class!   Email me at info@jjhortonphotography.com to sign up!

Baby | Ainsley Wren

I was bad and skipped blogging yesterday, so I’m making up for it today! Hooray! A few weeks ago I put out an invitation to photograph a newborn for free. You see, I have this great little office space but had never considered shooting in it (unless it was a simple headshot). But I got to thinking after the flooring was finished, that it might be viable to photograph the tiny ones in here and I wanted to test it out! Thankfully Shayne (Ainsley’s mom) was willing to make the hike to Davidson from Waxhaw on a freezing cold night with her brand new baby girl. They were so kind to give me their time and a little one to play with. It taught me that I can certainly photograph a baby in my space, and want to continue to pursue it. So… if you’re having a little one in the coming months, contact me for special newborn studio pricing! My whole thought for this shoot was to have a baby girl on my sideboard with a beautiful ribbon backdrop…. well, as you can see I didn’t have enough of a backdrop! Lesson learned for next time 🙂 This was definitely an experiment, and I’m grateful to have learned so much in a short hour!
