Portraits | 2011 Review

As promised, I’ve followed yesterday’s 2011 wedding review with our portraits 🙂 I really love doing portrait sessions, they’re so much more relaxed than a wedding day. We get to chit-chat and get to know our clients a bit better. While I really feed off the energy of a wedding day, the slower pace of portrait sessions are so nice! I included our bridals in here, as we consider them a “portrait” session….. I didn’t have bridals done when we got married, but I SO wish I had! It really allows you to try out your hair/makeup/shoes/jewels…. all together with that fabulous dress. ***I’ve been thinking about giving away a bridal session to our next bride we book….. would anyone be interested 😉 ????     Thank you all for making our 2011 extra special!   PS…. did you notice that little one in the bottom left corner??? I haven’t blogged her yet, but she’s the newest addition to the Horton family! Jeremy’s sister had her the week before Christmas, Anna Beth Avery 🙂

Engagement | Melissa & Jonathan

Back in the summer Melissa contacted me…. she’d gotten engaged and wanted to schedule a fall session (good girl planning ahead, as October is kicking our butts!) Melissa isn’t just any ‘ole engaged girl…. we spent countless nights together working at Maxie B’s bakery in Greensboro together. For several years we knew the ins and outs of each others lives, including all our boy drama. I was sad when I left that shop & great friends behind…. but I was so elated when Melissa found me years later wanting us to document this time in her life. We had a fabulous time at the Homestead Farm outside Bethesda, Maryland with them last weekend! *A special thanks to the farm for letting us stay past closing time to get the best possible photos with an amazing sunset!   The photo below is one of my all time favorites…. I think I’ll have to make a spot for a print of it in my office!   Congratulations on M & J! We’re delighted you chose us to photograph your engagement! Couple | Vanessa & Ryan

Back in the spring I came across this blog post by Jackie Wonders.  I loved her use of the car-wash, and wanted to expand on that idea. So the idea of this shoot was born. I’d come up with the perfect “all American” couple in my mind… the perfect car, the perfect wardrobe…. I found the perfect couple and wardrobe, however I was hoping for a car like an el Camino, or K5 Blazer…. but I digress. Jeremy’s old Suburban worked fine, and gave us other photo ops the other 2 cars wouldn’t have…. and the dark green color was perfect. I want to pause a moment to say this is the kind of shoot I LOVE. The kind of shoot I live for. When we have so much creative freedom, and the people we’re shooting trust us 100%, good things happen.     Thank you guys so much for being great sports!!

Engagement | Shannon & Tommy

Shannon & Tommy were the first couple I met with in my new office. I tidied the office & waited patiently for them to arrive. They were so sweet, asked great questions, took a copy of my contract and left. I crossed my fingers and toes I’d hear from them soon….. I did! Tommy called to let me know they were ready to book. Yay! A few weeks later Shannon was ready to their engagement photos, I asked if they had any spots in mind that were special to them… she had a great suggestion, Cannon Village in Kannapolis. It’s a great little row of antique stores, shops and restaurants with wonderful character. We started out at the old 1 screen theater. I just LOVED their outfits. This is a perfect example of how you coordinate without being “matchy matchy” One of my favorite places to shoot are parking decks. They provide a great neutral backdrop, while bouncing the sunlight off the pavement. We made our way back around to the theater for a few last shots before the looming storm rolled in and before it got dark. Thanks so much Shannon & Tommy for being great sports, and for suggesting a great spot to shoot! Your June wedding will be here before we know it!
